71 To start a split in a hazel rod use the billhook to cut into the rod and then lever the clefts apart (a); continue the split by twisting the hook as shown (b).

72 To rive long hazel rods use the nose of the billhook to lever the clefts apart (a), and the legs to help apply tension if the split runs off centre (b).

73 Using a small adze together with a riving post to rive a hazel rod.

74 Box or holly wood cleaves: (a) small cleave for hazel rods; (b) larger cleave for ash or oak sticks.
